HI-YU “DANCING IN THE RAIN” July 31, 2006
MEETINGS With the busy season over, we are back to one Hi-Yu general membership meetings a month. The meeting for August is at 7 pm on Monday, August 7th. Meetings are currently being held at Peace Lutheran Church, which is located at 8316 - 39th SW in West Seattle.
SEAFAIR Erin Waid, representing the West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival was crowned Miss Seafair at the 2006 Seafair Scholarship Program for Women Coronation held July 25, 2006. She was selected from 17 participants. Along with the title, Erin earned scholarships totaling $5,900. Way to go Erin!!! Go to www.seafair.com to see some pictures of Erin from the coronation. This is the first time since 1971 that Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu has won the title of Miss Seafair.
ELECTIONS The 2006-2007 Hi-Yu year will soon end. Elections of new officers will be held at the general membership meeting on September 5, 2006. In order to vote you must already be an individual or service club member for the 2005-2006 Hi-Yu year.
If you are interested in an officer position next year, contact a member of the Board of Directors. Nominations may also be made from the floor at the September meeting. New officer positions will be effective on October 1, 2006.
HI-YU ROYALTY PROFILES The 2005-2006 royal courts continue to serve until 10/1/2006.
Queen Michelle Edwards played the piano at the White Rose reception. She also played with the West Seattle Big Band at the Concert in the Park.
Princess Savannah Hendrickson has started a job at the YMCA, and has learned CPR.
Princess Lori Nguyen took a break for a trip to Mexico before she started a summer job. She didn’t mind getting fishy measuring fish for the kids at the fishing derby.
Queen Emily Lyons is enjoying all the summer Hi-Yu activities, and especially had fun at the street dance.
Princess Alison Nichols has been busy running around to various track meets across the country and participating in the 400 and 800, but also found time to catch a big fish at the fishing derby.
Princess Alexis (Alex) Rodal loved the Pirates’ Landing and the fishing derby.
HI-YU 2006-2007 COURTS SELECTED SENIOR COURT: The Senior Court was chosen at Coronation on July 24th. Their reign will begin on October 1st. The new Senior Court is:
Trisha Thompson was selected Queen.
Keili Geller was selected Princess.
Lisa Tran withdrew her candidacy due to other commitments, but we still hope to see her around the West Seattle area and at the various Hi-Yu activities throughout the year.
JUNIOR COURT: The new Junior Court was chosen at Hiawatha Kids Fun Festival on July 14th. Their first official activity was to lead the Rotary Kiddies Parade on July 22nd. They are:

FLOAT Saturday, August 5, 6 pm, is the Lake City Pioneer Days Parade in Lake City.
SERVICE CLUB/NONPROFITS PUBLIC EVENTS

West Seattle Sportsmens Club The Salmon bake will be on Wednesday, August 2nd at 6 p.m., shelter 3 at Lincoln Park. Everyone is welcome. The $8 fee (free for kids 14 and under) will be well worth it for all the great food. For more information visit their website at www.westseattlesportsmen.org.
West Seattle Kiwanis Project Cool – thousands of backpacks will be stuffed with school supplies for homeless children on August 14th and 15th from 3-7 p.m. at First Place If you would like to help stuff backpacks or if you have new school supplies to donate (particularly pens and binders), contact the Kiwanis. Northwest Hope and Healing Half-Marathon to help local breast cancer patients is on August 12th at 8 a.m. at Lincoln Park. Senior Center of West Seattle Cabaret Night, with luau themed teriyaki chicken and Kalua pork served by Hooters Restaurant, on Tuesday, August 22nd, dinner at 5:30, entertainment starts at 6:30. $12 per person ($8 for members). PAST COURT ROYALTY UPDATES The Hi-Yu Junior Court of 2003-2004 (Queen Tyler Webster, Princesses Veronica Szender and Melissa Carter) will be appearing in “Cinderella” as part of the Summer Musical Theater Adventures Camp. MEMBERSHIP Memberships are now being accepted for the year which runs from October 1, 2006 through September 30, 2007. Act now and be one of the first to become a member for the 2006-2007 Hi-Yu year.
Memberships support the various Hi-Yu activities and the scholarships for the Senior Court. There are three types of memberships: individual, service club/non-profit and business. Individual memberships start at $20.00, non-profit memberships are $30.00, and business memberships start at $50.00.
