WEST SEATTLE HI-YU “PEARLS OF THE SEA” April 30, 2007
MEETINGS The Hi-Yu general membership meeting in May will be on Monday at 7 pm on May 7th. The meeting will be at Merrill Gardens at 4611 – 35th Avenue SW in West Seattle. Enter at the main door on 35th, sign in at the desk on the special Hi-Yu sheet, take the elevator down to level P-1, and go to the Activities Room. If the door is locked to the building, you have to ring the doorbell to the right of the main door to be let into the building. Parking is on the street.
BUTTONS The Pearl of the Sea buttons are currently being printed and should be ready soon. They will be available from the royalty and Hi-Yu members for a $1.00 suggested minimum donation.
FLOAT
Construction The float is almost done. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered their time and energy to make this happen. More than 30 different people have worked on construction of the float over the last two months, putting in several hundred hours of work. But we are not done yet. There is still paint and glitter to be done this week, and the float needs to be assembled this coming weekend (May 5th and 6th). Irrigation Festival Parade Saturday, May 12th, noon. Travel with the float to Sequim for the float’s first parade of the year.
Rhododendren Festival Parade Saturday, May 19th, 1 p.m. The second outing for the float is to Port Townsend.
SERVICE CLUB/NONPROFITS PUBLIC EVENTS
Hiawatha Community Center Saturday, May 12th at 1 p.m. The dedication of a bench at the community center in the name of Dorothy Poplawski is scheduled by the wading pool at 1 p.m., with a short celebration to follow. Dorothy was a long time Hi-Yu member and valuable member of the Center and the community. Your presence at this memorial dedication is welcomed and appreciated. West Seattle Kiwanis Saturday, May 12th, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., Car Check – the Kiwanis are sponsoring a youth automotive preventive maintenance event in the lot at 3900 SW Edmunds Street. Students trained by skilled mechanics from Gee Automotive Group and South Seattle Community College automotive shop will be performing FREE 17-point vehicle inspections.
The Kiwanis will have a booth at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market every Sunday, starting on April 29th. The Kiwanis will be collecting donations for the food bank, providing coffee, and conducting various other activities during the market. Currently they are doing arts and crafts with children to create Mother’s Day cards.

HI-YU ROYALTY PROFILES
Senior Court: Queen Trisha Thompson made the Dean’s list again, but is counting the days until she can return home to Seattle.
Princess Keili Geller is enjoying her senior year in high school, and recently took at trip to North Carolina to sign up for classes for college next year.
Junior Court: Queen Gabrielle Carufel had a fabulous birthday party, and is enjoying working on the float.
Princess Hailey Miller is keeping busy with school and choir practice.
Princess Haley Pierce had a great time visiting with her sister Sabrina, including a party at the beach.
CANDIDATES FOR MISS WEST SEATTLE HI-YU Applications are currently being accepted for next year’s Senior Court. Applicants must be single young women between 17 and 22 years old (not turning 23 before August 1, 2007), either attending high school or a high school graduate. Applicants must live, work, or attend school in West Seattle. Contact Carol at 938-2088 for an application or additional information on qualifications and requirements. Deadline for return of applications is May 15, 2007.

MEMBERSHIP Memberships are still being accepted for the year which runs from October 1, 2006 through September 30, 2007. Memberships support the various Hi-Yu activities and the scholarships for the Senior Court. There are three types of memberships: individual, service club/non-profit and business. Individual memberships start at $20.00, non-profit memberships are $30.00, and business memberships start at $50.00.
