MEETINGS The Hi-Yu general membership meeting for December will be on Monday, December 3rd at 7 pm at Merrill Gardens at 4611 – 35th Avenue SW in West Seattle. Enter at the main door on 35th, sign in at the desk on the special Hi-Yu sheet, take the elevator down to level P-1, and go to the Activities Room. If the door is locked to the building, you have to ring the doorbell to the right of the main door to be let into the building. Parking is on the street.
FLOAT We have a theme! There were a lot of great ideas, and we had to vote 3 times to narrow it down. The winner was: Luna Park. For those of you not familiar with the history of West Seattle, Luna Park was an amusement park that operated from 1907-1913. It had such attractions as the Great Figure 8 Roller Coaster, The Giant Whirl, Shoot the Chutes, Canals of Venice, Cave of Mystery, and the Looff Carousel (which is still in operation in San Francisco). Luna Park was built on a boardwalk west of Alki Point, and included restaurants, the Natatorium (swimming pool), and a dance pavilion (as well as the “longest bar on the Bay” for the adults). Start thinking of how we can fantasize some of the features from Luna Park and make them into a fantastic float. Design meetings will be scheduled soon. Also start thinking about button designs.
COMMITTEES The Senior Court Scholarship Program Advisory Committee report was approved and the recommended changes in the Standing Rules were passed by membership vote. A candidate coordinator is now needed.
The Float Advisory Committee is still hard at work developing a plan for a new float and trailer. In the meantime, a float chairperson is needed to coordinate the float program for this year (scheduling design and construction meetings, sign up and transportation to parades). Tom Warnke has volunteered to lead the efforts for the tear down of the float, so it will be ready for work to commence.
The Marketing Advisory Committee prepared a first draft of a brochure that is now being worked on by a graphic designer. We hope to have it available soon.
