WEST SEATTLE HI-YU May 26, 2008 LUNA PARK
MEETINGS
As we approach the busy season, we are expanding our membership meetings to twice a month so we can keep up with all the activities. The Hi-Yu general membership meetings for June will be Monday, June 2nd AND Monday, June 16th at 7 pm at Merrill Gardens at 4611 – 35th Avenue SW in West Seattle. Enter at the main door on 35th, sign in at the desk on the special Hi-Yu sheet, take the elevator down to level P-1, and go to the Activities Room. If the door is locked to the building, you have to ring the doorbell to the right of the main door to be let into the building. Parking is on the street.
CANDIDATES
We have 5 great candidates this year for Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu 2009. They are:
Margo Femiano attends Chief Sealth High School. She just returned from a 3 week trip traveling through China. Next year she plans to attend Seattle University and study environmental science.
Grace Johnson was amazed by the spectacular float and looks forward to helping make it all come together.
Katie Tarabochia attends West Seattle High School. She thought glittering float items was a lot of fun [it is!].
Lauren Vanderpool attends Seattle Lutheran High School. Her first float experience involved lots of duct tape.
Alicia Watanabe attends the University of Washington. She learned how to make fantastic stars from duct tape, dryer sheets, paint and glitter.
FLOAT/PARADES
Sequim Irrigation Festival Parade: The day was an overall success with a few setbacks. Volunteers worked hard all week and we found our truck drivers at the last minute. We weren’t able to complete quite all of the construction items on time. This meant that we left for the parade 2 hours late (7am instead of 5am) because we had to finish preparing the float for travel. We arrived too late for award judging, but in time for the parade. Second, we weren’t able to get the sound system working. We went without music, not the best, but it gave us more opportunity to interact with the appreciative crowd. Many people thanked us for coming. Queen Sivona and the Jr Court (Queen Danica and Princesses India, Vanessa, Leah, and Ally) took the obstacles in stride and had a great time while making West Seattle look good for the other parade participants and the Sequim community. All went well, until the float overheated with 2 blocks to go. We pushed it to the end. After cooling down we were able to restart it and drive it on to the trailer.
Port Townsend Rhododendron Festival Parade: With the float suffering from overheating problems that caused us to push it for the last 2 blocks in last week’s parade at Sequim, Sivona and the Junior Court road in convertibles for the Port Townsend Rhododendron Festival parade. The Rhododendron Festival folks are always great hosts and were appreciative of our participation. This parade stages in a shady, residential area and always seems to be the one where the courts representing the various communities have the best opportunity to socialize. After the parade, the Junior Court and their families stayed for the carnival.
Strawberry Festival Parade in Marysville: Saturday, June 14th, 8 p.m.
We are working to have our float ready for the Marysville Strawberry Festival on June 14th. If you’re not already on the e-mail list for notification of work parties, contact Lori at tongol@spu.edu
Fathoms of Fun Parade in Port Orchard: Saturday, June 28th, 6 p.m.
